Antique Art Nouveau Jugendstil Silver Plique-à-Jour Scarab Brooch

£585.00

A rare and wonderful silver scarab brooch dating to the Art Nouveau period. The scarab is set with beautiful plique-à-Jour glass wings with vibrant blue enamel detailing.

At the centre of the brooch sits a faience scarab set into an open backed frame that reveals a little carved scarab hieroglyphic on its back.

There are a set of small import hallmarks on the clasp of the pin which can be seen in picture 8. The brooch was most likely designed by Otto Prutscher for Heinrich Levinger. A similar design was sold at auction Christies in 2000 which is archived here

The brooch came to me with its clasp hook missing so I have had my jeweller carefully attach a new roll over clasp to ensure that it can be worn securely. The rest of the clasp is completely original to the brooch.

There is some surface wear to the faience and a small patch of wear to one blue enamel wing. The brooch remains in good antique condition overall.
